History of Lexington Memorial Cemetery, Inc.

Inception:

In 1951 the Lexington Jaycees saw the need for a community cemetery since there was only one denominational cemetery in Lexington. Adopting this cause as one of their projects, they began a campaign to secure land for a public cemetery. Samuel B. George and his wife Olga H. George responded by donating an eight acre tract of land which is the site of Lexington Memorial Cemetery. The Junior Chamber of Commerce and the Lexington Jaycees developed 4 acres of the land for the cemetery and turned over the governance of the corporation to a Board of Directors to be composed of three members from each of the following three churches: Lexington Baptist Church, Lexington Methodist Church, and St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church.
